“Straw Ban Parody”

This is my first of the two compositions I’ve created for this assignment. For this assignment, I decided to create an advertisement video about my topic, the plastic straw ban. For the first advertisement I decided to create a “mockumentary” genre video. A “mockumentary” is a motion picture or television program that takes the form of a documentary in order to satirize its subject through mocking the subject. I used humor to persuade the viewer to denote the plastic straw ban. In this video I turn everyday objects into straws. This helps to convey how ridiculous the straw ban is. Straws aren’t used on a daily basis. What’s the need to ban them? By substituting the straw with everyday items, it brings to light this idea. Straws are

simply not as commonly used as other plastic household items. The humor displayed in my advertisement provides the viewer with a comedic view on the ban. This ban seems ridiculous after watching the video. The ban doesn’t address the mass amounts of plastic pollution. My intended audience for this advertisement is the general public. Most people in the public are aware of this ban since Starbucks infamously has gotten rid of its plastic straws. Throughout 2018, we’ve been hearing about this ban as well. I want this advertisement to open the viewers mind. The straw ban at first seems like a good idea. It seems like were helping the environment. I want to make it loud and clear that this isn’t the case. I achieve this by replacing everyday items with straws to show how irrelevant they are when compared to the big picture. We should cut down on other heavy plastic products, instead of the insignificant straw.

“Support Straw Ban Commercial”

The second commercial I created is extremely different than the first commercial. I wanted to take an informational point of view in this commercial. I used the informative genre to deliver as powerful and factual based message. The video does not use any speech. I’ve done so on purpose. The powerful music helps to focus the viewer on the reading on screen. The ominous music adds a level of mystery and makes you want to watch the commercial. By only putting text on the screen it stimulates the reader. I feel the message is stronger by reading rather than listening. When you read you listen to that little voice in your head. By doing so, the message speaks louder. In the video by talking about facts, it adds a layer of validity. By providing facts, such as, Americans using 500 million straws a day, it strikes the viewer. Remembering these shocking facts will help to shape the viewers opinion on the issue. The audience I targeted is the same as in the first video. The main target audience is the general public. The general public is wasteful of its plastic and this ad helps to bring awareness to that in a short and positive way. It might only talk about straws being banned in a positive way, but it’s a place to start. This advertisement is designed to shock the viewer and to add some level of guilt. The shocking facts such as, 1 million sea birds die a year from ingesting plastic, allow this advertisement to be memorable and inform people that their actions do have consequences that ripple out.
